Classical Cats - Presenting Exquisite Sphinx

History of the Sphynx

The Sphynx is a natural mutation that occured around 1966 from a regular domestic shorthaired cat. The breed was then cultivated by careful outcrossing to American Shorthairs and Devons. Today, we use domestic shorthairs, as well.

The Sphynx is an intelligent, playful and loyal breed that is very people-oriented. They enjoy riding in the car, visiting friends and hanging out with their owners. They have a normal life-span and do not have any special health problems. A house kept at a normal temperature is fine for a Sphynx. They wear sweaters and can be wrapped in a blanket when taken out in the winter.

Sphynx come in all colors and Classical Cats has a wide variety of colors in the cattery. Even though they are hairless, the Sphynx is not a low-maintenance breed. Because there is no hair to absorb the natural oils in their skin, they require frequent bathing. Of course they are not difficult to bathe or dry and the kittens are all quite used to it by the time they go to their new home.

Some people with allergies hope that they will be able to have a Sphynx. We have found it really depends on the person - we have seen it go both ways, so we don't neccessarily recommend them for people who are allergic to cats.

The price of Classical Cats' Sphynx pets depend on the degree of hairlessness, ranging from $800 to $1200. If you have any questions or further interest in Sphynx, please give us a call.
